Painted furniture is the quickest way to change a room without changing the room. A tired dresser, a set of dining chairs or an old bookcase can take a colour you might never commit a whole wall to.
For furniture and cabinetry, use semi gloss. It is tougher and easier to wipe clean than low sheen, which matters on surfaces that get handled every day. Most of the result comes from the prep: clean, sand and prime before you paint.
